GOLETA, Calif. -- Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies will be conducting DUI and driver's license checkpoints in the area.
Checkpoints are expected to start on Friday, July 5th from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Officers will be positioned in the area where they believe they will be able to deter the most people driving drunk.
Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol or other drug impairment. If anyone is caught driving under the influence they could be arrested and put in jail, have their license suspended, pay fines and fees, take DUI classes and other expenses that could cost more than $10,000.
The sobriety checkpoints are put into place so people can be safer while out on the road. Funding for the checkpoint operation comes from grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
