Boeing Plane Crashes at San Francisco Airport, 2 Teens Killed
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif -- The FAA confirms an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 crashed at San Francisco International Airport around noon on Saturday. Including crew members, there were 307 people on board.
According to several media outlets, at least two people have died and 49 are in the hospital with critical injuries. 132 people were taken to the hospital with less serious injuries and 123 of the passengers were uninjured, according to the latest reports from the hospital and the airport.
Two women in their mid-teens were reportedly killed from the crash. Officials have identified them as Chinese Nationals.
As of 7:00 p.m. Sunday, six people remain in critical condition and two people have been paralyzed.
A lot of the plane crash victims do not speak English and officials were looking for translators. (141 passengers are Chinese, 77 are Korean, 61 are American, and 1 is Japanese).
FAA officials confirm the plane went down while it was trying to land. The tail came apart from the plane and the resulting fire sent black smoke billowing into the air, which can be seen from miles away. The FBI says that there is no sign that this was a terrorist attack.
Witnesses say they heard a loud bang before and saw a huge cloud of smoke. Rescue vehicles were on the scene immediately afterwards.
The San Francisco Airport has been closed down since the crash. No flights are being allowed in or out of the airport at this time. The FAA and emergency crews are still investigating the cause of the accident.
The Boeing 777-200 plane is a long-range type plane. It's a twin-engine aircraft and is one of the world's most popular long-distance planes. It can carry around 246 to 300 passengers on flights up to 12 hours or more.
According to CBS, the last time a large U.S. airline lost a plane in a fatal crash was the American Airlines Airbus A300 when it was taking off from JFK in 2001.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to investigate the crash. NTSB spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said that the NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman would head the team.
