SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Police are warning people about a scam taking place in the Santa Barbara area. Most of the people that have been targeted are elderly Spanish speaking people on the Eastside and North End of Santa Barbara.
Officers say anyone anywhere can fall victim to these crimes. In the past few days several reports have been made of a "water employee" of the Public Works Department contacting residents and going into their homes to check the water quality.
Public Works says no activity is currently being done by the city or other agencies involved in water distribution in the area, police said.
Criminals could be doing this to case homes to burglarize or commit other crimes. Residents are being told to be cautious, and report any suspicious activity to police by calling 911.
