SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The gay community in San Luis Obispo celebrated its 17th annual Gay Pride Festival.
This comes after the Supreme Court handed down two rulings in favor of gay marriage back in June.
One local couple has been married since 2008 and are striving to give commitment a new meaning.
At the Pride Festival in San Luis Obispo, David Robinson preaches tolerance.
Robinson and his partner Gerry Lindermulder have been married for five years and with the Supreme Court rulings in favor of gay marriage, they felt they could finally breath a sigh of relief.
"I broke out in tears," says David Robinson. "And even I didn't realize how emotional the impact was going to be until it hit me. When you grow up gay, there's always a sense that society does not accept you and here was the highest court in the land saying 'Yes, you are as legitimate as everybody else.'"
And it's not just stereotypes the couple is trying to break, every year David and Gerry hold a non-denominational service at the Gay Pride Festival to educate.
"There are a wide range of religions that fight for everyone's rights," says Robinson.
Rights that until this day opponents are trying to block. Attorneys filed a petition against county clerks from performing the ceremonies.
"They're making some desperate attempts to try to take rights away from somebody that actually has them," says Gay Rights Activist Robert Kinports. "I honestly don't think they will get anywhere with it."
But until then, David and Gerry will preach on.
"The key to changing the world is changing the hearts and minds of individuals," says Robinson.
Organizers estimate 3,000-4,000 people will celebrate at this year's Gay Pride Festival.
