SANTA MARIA, Calif.- The Anthony Ibarra murder case is one of the largest cases in county history, which has court officials now searching for a larger venue.
It's a place we typically associate with family fun, but the Santa Maria Fairpark could soon be transformed into a courtroom. One of the possible new locations where the Anthony Ibarra murder case could be moved.
"Just the shear size of this one. Eleven defendants and eleven lawyers, plus additional attorneys is twenty-something people that have to fit, that just doesn't work," said Darrel Parker, Chief Executive Officer of the Santa Barbara County Superior Court.
So far, all court hearings for the Ibarra case have taken place inside the Santa Barbara County Courthouse. At Thursday's hearing, defense attorneys argued for a larger venue, in order for the suspects to be given a fair and adequate defense.
"Maybe City Council Chambers. The Fairpark has a large space, the Elks Lodge has space, the Board of Supervisors just expanded the hearing room, maybe those are places," said Parker as he listed a number of possible venues.
This isn't the first time court administration has had to maneuver to accommodate defendants and their attorneys.
"Similarly we had to select from a large group of jurors in the Michael Jackson trial and we did that at the Abel Maldonado Center in the gymnasium," explained Parker.
Additional courtroom security will also be required, but it's not expected to result in any added costs.
"By the time a trial comes along, if there is a trial, I'm assuming it will be a much small group of defendants were handling," said Parker.
Next week Parker and a sergeant from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office will measure the spaces of each facility and look at the security issues. As for the eleven defendants, they are expected to be back in court in September.
