SANTA MARIA - The eleven men and women charged in the murder of Anthony Ibarra earlier this year were back in Santa Maria court dressed in street clothes and not their county jail jumpsuits.
A condition the judge granted defense attorneys in the case in order for the local news media to be allowed in court to photograph and videotape the defendants in court as long as they are not photographed in handcuffs or other restraints.
Defense attorneys in the case told Judge Rick Brown they are not being given adequate, confidential access to their clients while they remain in county jail most with no bail allowed.
The defense attorneys also argued for a larger venue for the case going forward, in order to ensure the accused are given a fair and adequate defense.
"The inadequate facilities discussion only dealt with the courtroom, the fact that defense council doesn't have a place to sit, or a table, a place to put their binders, that type of thing", says Santa Barbara County Assistant District Attorney and lead prosecutor in the case, "so the next time I don't know where we will be but they are going to move this case to a setting where all of the defense counsel can have tables and chairs and everybody can have adequate defense."
The Ibarra defendants did not enter pleas to the various charges against them which include kidnapping, torture, murder and accessory to murder after the fact in the brutal killing of Anthony Ibarra at a home on West Donovan Road in Santa Maria earlier this year.
Ibarra's naked body was found two days later in an abandoned U-Haul trailer parked in Orcutt.
Grand Jury transcripts reveal the alleged motivation behind Ibarra's kidnapping, torture and murder was unpaid drug debts.
The eleven defendants will return for another hearing on September 12 at an undetermined location off of the Santa Maria Superior Court campus.
