SANTA MARIA - "They taught me discipline", says Air Force veteran Cliff Schneider.
Schneider says men and women transitioning from military to civilian life are uniquely qualified as potential employees.
"You paid attention to detail, they stressed that, pay attention to detail", Schneider says, "when you're working a job, you need to pay attention to what you are doing and the training that you get in the military prepares you for that."
Federal labor statistics show the jobless rate among recent veterans has dropped significantly to match the overall unemployment in the country at just over 7 percent.
The improvement is credited to major corporations honoring pledges to hire more vets, federal tax incentives and allowing returning vets to get professional licenses based on their military training.
"Coming back into society they need something that says everything is going to be okay, that you are going to be taken care of, that you are going to have an income, you'll be able to support yourself", Schneider says, "if employers out there would take that mindset, and say listen, we can help veterans by streamlining back into society, by giving them good paying jobs and medical benefits that's the battle right there."
Nearly three million men and women have served in the U.S. military since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
