SALINAS, Calif -- Police blocked off the intersection of Harkins and Hansen Street in Salinas as they investigated an accident that sent one person to the hospital with critical injuries.
Police said that the victim, 58-year-old Juan Hernandez parked his tractor trailer rid on Schilling Road around 6 a.m.. For some unknown ready Hernandez got out of his truck and began shouting to a person who was across the street trying to get their attention, said police.
Hernandez then ran across the street, directly in the path of an oncoming Toyota Avalon driven by a 47-year-old woman, said police. He was hit by a car and thrown into the air, landing on the pavement.
Hernandez was transported to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He is currently in ICU in critical condition, said police.
Officers checked the cell phone of the driver of the Toyota and found she was not texting or talking on the phone during or prior to the collision.
