SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif- The woman who is accused of robbing six banks up and down the Central Coast has pleaded not guilty to all the charges Wednesday morning.
Cristina Padilla is believed to be the Central Coast Bandit. She was arrested Friday after she led officers on a chase and crashed her car in Paso Robles, said police. The 50-year-old woman from Watsonville told a local news agency in an off camera interview that she only robbed banks because she needed money for food and to help buy school uniforms for her 11-year-old daughter.
Despite the alleged confession to a local reporter, Padilla pleaded not guilty to all 13 charges.
In court Wednesday morning Padilla was no longer grinning for a surveillance camera but gritting her teeth in handcuffs. She's facing 13 felony counts for crimes that include 2nd degree commercial burglary, 2nd degree robbery, attempted robbery, evading an officer and assault with a deadly weapon, in this case, her car.
With this many counts the number of potential years behind bars could add up. "The robbery charge carries 5 years, a commercial burglary charge carries up to 3 years, if she was convicted of both of those charges she would not be punished for both of those charges," said Padilla's Attorney Linden Mackaoui.
According to court documents Padilla is no stranger to the law. She has a prior conviction of first degree burglary in Monterey County from 2005, which could enhance her sentencing and, due to realignment, send her to prison. "If they have a strike prior as the allegation against Ms. Padilla, if that were true, then she would not be eligible to do her time in county jail and she would have to go to prison," said Mackaoui.
Padilla could potentially face both state and federal charges, however federal charges have not yet been filed. Her bail is set at 1-million dollars and she will be back in court one week from today for her preliminary hearing.
