CENTRAL COAST, Calif. - It may just look like a typical cartoon, but it packs some powerful messages about society.
Central Coast Native David Scheve says he was inspired by the "Schoolhouse Rock" films from the 1970s, but then added in his own unique twist.
"I just started seeing what was going on in the world, " said Scheve, who works as a writer, director, and producer for TDA Productions. "As I was looking at the original "SchoolHouse Rock" films, the minute I saw the women's rights spot, I knew that it was perfect for the gay rights spot. It's just the two line up."
Scheve got his start by performing in many theater productions on the Central Coast, including at Allan Hancock College when he was in high school.
"Growing up, I did a lot of shows at the Great American Melodrama and then PCPA Theaterfest, which is where I got my initial training." Scheve explained. "At that time, the Central Coast didn't have a lot of arts and music programs, and so I learned on the job at those places."
His short films, titled "Hard Knock Rock," include many of the original voices from the "Schoolhouse Rock" films and cover a variety of issues, including gay rights.
The films are already gaining momentum. His short film "Sufferin' Till You're Straight" is scheduled to appear is 13 different film festivals just this year.
"I think what's great about this film, and what I hope it does, is that you can really talk to people about subjects that might make them uncomfortable when you add music and comedy." said Scheve. "This might open people's eyes to that gay people have been here from the beginning of time."
Scheve tells Central Coast News he plans to pitch his short films to several late night shows, like "Saturday Night Live."
