SANTA MARIA - The private attorney for 21 year old Kelsi Sullivan appeared in Santa Maria Court on her behalf Tuesday morning.
Attorney Tom Allen entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter against Sullivan in the death of 15 year old Leticia Hernandez who was struck and killed while crossing Miller Street at the intersection with Newlove Drive last June.
Because it's a misdemeanor charge, Sullivan was not required to appear in court for her arraignment.
Sullivan is accused of failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk at the Miller-Newlove intersection.
The District Attorney's office has not introduced any evidence that Sullivan was under the influence or distracted while driving northbound on Miller at the time of the deadly collision.
However the speed Sullivan was driving at the time of the collision remains undisclosed.
"Its a really tragic accident", Allen says about the case against his client, "I just received the reports this morning so I haven't had the chance to evaluate what the reports have to say."
The family of Leticia Hernandez was in Santa Maria Court hoping to see for the first time the young woman accused of causing the deadly collision.
"I believe that she feels guilty", says Pedro Hernandez Sanchez through an interpreter, "we know that she's guilty, that's the reason why she didn't come here today."
"Yesterday I was missing my daughter so much", Hernandez Sanchez says, "I would like to go and get my daughter out of the grave, I want to see her again, but I know that's impossible."
The case against Kelsi Sullivan returns to Santa Maria Court on September 23.
