Luis Obispo -- The California Highway Patrol is holding workshops to make sure
parents are restraining their children properly. The CHP and the San Luis Obispo County Public
Health Department are always working to make sure children are properly restrained
especially this year because the
state law changed.
the beginning of the year the law went from "4 and 40" meaning children 4 years
old and 40 pounds must be in a car seat. Now children younger than 8 years old
must be in a child safety seat or booster seat, in the back seat of the car,
unless they are 4-foot 9 or taller.
officers say children should be in a restraint until at least 10 to 12 years
old, and it's suggested they ride in the back seat not in the front passenger
seat. The child safety seat also needs to be installed properly. If it isn't
parents can receive a citation and fines.
National Highway Safety Institute reports car crashes are a leading cause of death in the United
States for children ages 1 to 13. The proper car seat can reduce the chance of
death for a baby by 71-percent, and for toddlers by 54-percent.
week is Child Passenger Safety Week and the CHP is holding instructional
workshops starting Saturday.
Officers are holding a car seat inspection in Nipomo at Tefft and Blume
Streets starting at 9 am to 1 pm.
