ATASCADERO, Calif- The city of Atascadero is moving along with its campaign to bring in more visitors by taking advantage of social media.
"People are coming to town, we have probably 350 homes under construction or in the pipelines so we are progressing," said Atascadero City Councilman Bob Kelley. The city of Atascadero is growing, so much so that the city has launched a new campaign to boost tourism. It hired an advertising company for about 175-thousand dollars.
"This company has formed the web page and they are starting to get hits and reviews on it," said Kelley. "As we go along we are going to try and increase it and take advantage of some of the newer technologies." The main goal is get people to stay overnight in the city. "The page had got close to 1-thousand hits on hotel information and an owner of a hotel said they had noticed a slight increase in people contacting their hotels to get information and that the occupancy has gone up," said Kelley.
Some hotels, like the Carlton, said things have been looking up. "The hotel's been doing really well and seen a lot of people the last couple years and it keeps getting better and better," said Travis Badger of the Carlton Hotel. "I think this will put a nice addition to it."
The web site not only shows off all the attractions in Atascadero but those in surrounding areas. "It's our goal that we can advertise for Hearst Castle, we have Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and all the different places and you can still come to Atascadero and stay there and go to those facilities at the same time," said Kelley.
The next step will be a video series promoting the city on YouTube and Charter. Earlier this year Atascadero also formed a "Tourism Business Improvement District" which brings in some tax dollars that are used for promoting the city and for advertising.
