PHOENIX, Ariz. – Former UCSB basketball star James Nunnally has a chance to play in the NBA this season after signing a contract with the Phoenix Suns. Nunnally, a 6-foot-7, 205 pound guard/forward, finalized a deal this past weekend and was on the court when the team opened up training camp today in Flagstaff, Arizona.
A three-time All-Big West selection during his four-year Gaucho career (2008-12), the 23-year old Nunnally spent the past season playing for the Suns' D-League affiliate in Bakersfield. While with the Jam, the Stockton native averaged 10.3 points per game.
Most recently, he played for the Miami Heat in the 2013 Las Vegas Summer League, where he was able to showcase his skills by leading the team with an average of 13.0 points per game. He finished the summer league season shooting nearly 58 percent from the field and 63 percent from behind the three-point line. His professional experience also includes spending the 2012 Las Vegas Summer League season with the Sacramento Kings.
While with the Gauchos, Nunnally played an instrumental role in helping lead the team to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2010, 2011). After graduating in 2012, he finished his career as the program's fourth all-time leader in scoring, fourth in free throws, fifth in field goals and field goal attempts, sixth in three-point field goals and ninth in rebounds.
Should he earn a spot with the Suns, Nunnally would join former UCSB teammate Orlando Johnson as the second former Gaucho currently on an NBA roster. A rookie with the Indiana Pacers last season, Johnson played in 51 games and averaged 4.0 points per contest. Dating back to 1967, 23 former Gauchos have either been signed or drafted by an NBA team, most notably current Denver Nuggets head coach Brian Shaw, who played 16 years in the league.
