ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. -- A car slams into an Arroyo Grande restaurant destroying it on the inside.
Now, restaurant owner, Francisco Garcia, is trying to pick up the pieces.
At about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, crews were attempting to pull a vehicle out of the storefront of Francisco's Country Kitchen.
"Well, I thought somebody broke into it," says Francisco Garcia, owner of Francisco's Country Kitchen. "That's the first thing, when my girls called me at four o'clock in the morning, somebody breaks in...so I said 'Oh boy!'.
Instead, firefighters say a car was traveling at about 100 miles an hour going southbound off the freeway before slamming into the restaurant.
"I thought the building was going to come down," says Garcia. "'Cause the car was inside the building and everything was really a real mess."
Five Cities Firefighters say California Highway Patrol officers detained the driver who remained unharmed.
"It's very lucky, it happened at this time of day when the restaurant was closed," says Robert Child with Five Cities Fire Authority. "And there weren't any other patrons in the restaurant that could've been injured."
Eight hours later, clean-up crews are still picking up the pieces.
"Going to lose some business, you know, I've been open for 23 years," says Garcia. "We never been closed until now."
Francisco says weekends are his busiest days but now, the restaurant might be losing business for a couple of weeks.
"Oh I hope not!" says Garcia. "I would say (I'm losing) five thousand dollars a day, so I hope we can recover that."
Francisco is waiting for the insurance company to assess a dollar estimate of the damage.
