SANTA MARIA - Heavily armed Santa Maria Police Officers took up positions around the notorious Budget Inn Motel on North Broadway Tuesday morning where they believe at least three suspects in the shooting of another man a few blocks away were holed up.
"The suspects ran from the area, we believe at this point that they are at the Budget Inn hiding", says SMPD Det. Jose Deleija, "witnesses saw people running from the area to the motel."
Santa Maria Police say witnesses described two Hispanic males and an Hispanic female running from the shooting scene at about 6:30am, police say the female suspect ran with a limp.
Police evacuated the Budget Inn motel and guests and tenants were moved to an area away from the motel.
A P. A. system was used to convince others still inside one of the rooms in the motel to come out with their hands up.
Two women and one man eventually walked out of an upstairs room with their hands up and were briefly taken into custody where they were questioned and then released.
The tense police standoff lasted for quite awhile in the morning as heavily armed police went searching room by room at the Budget Inn hoping to find their suspects.
Police even went up on the roof of the motel and neighboring buildings looking for the suspects, but no arrests were made.
"It may have been people were running from the area because they heard shots fired", SMPD Det. Deleija said later in the morning, "we're going to be reviewing surveillance video from the local businesses in the area to see if we have anything further."
The unidentified shooting victim is in stable condition at Marian Regional Medical Center with what police say is a gunshot wound to the foot.
A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
If you have any information about the shooting or the suspects involved contact the Santa Maria Police Department immediately.
