SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif- It's not a lot but for the first time in a long time we're seeing some rainfall on the Central Coast. With consecutive drought years every drop counts and October could be an indicator of how the rest of the season could play out.
This morning only droplets covered the central coast and residents and farmers alike say it is not enough. "The system is more or less starved for a lot of moisture," said Meteorologist John Lindsey. How much rainfall the Central Coast gets this month could be an indicator of how dry or wet the entire season will be.
Two of the driest years were in 1972 and 1984. "'72 & '84 had about 3 inches of precipitation up to this point," said Lindsey. "So far this year we've had about 3.5 inches of precipitation or rainfall however both in 1972 and 1984 were very wet Octobers." This year has been one of the driest seasons. "So if we don't get on track and start receiving a lot of precipitation and a lot of rainfall during this month then 2013 up to the end of October could become the driest year on record," said Lindsey.
All this data comes from the home of climatology for San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly. The information from the weather stations on campus are sent to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The data shows we haven't had a good year since 2010. "December of 2010 was really our last good month of rainfall and since that time it's been almost every single month, not every month, but almost every single month has been below average rainfall," said Lindsey.
During December of 2010 there was even enough rainfall that some of reservoirs and lakes on the Central Coast were filled to capacity.
