Santa Barbara- A small percentage of cars and trucks are responsible for a large amount of air pollution, according to the US Department of Transportation. Because of this fact Santa Barbara County is working to get those smog producers off our local roads.
Santa Barbara County estimates there are some 30-thousand cars and trucks now eligible to be bought and destroyed.
Before you get in line to unload your old junker there are some qualifications your car must first meet:
The car has to be 1992 or older
It has to have been registered in Santa Barbara County for at least the past two years
The car has to be able to operate, run down the street, have most of its moving parts.
If it meets all those requirements your car will end up at a local dismantler and you'll end up with a check for 800-dollars.
According to the county the money is well spent. The county has calculated that this program, since 2006, has reduced about 35 tons of smog forming pollution in Santa Barbara County."
SLO county currently does not have a buyback program. There is one in the works for sometime next year.
