NIPOMO - You may have never considered this when shopping for roses but, many are sprayed, rinsed, and dipped in a battery of potentially lethal chemicals before they ever reach your local retailer. Most of those flowers are shipped up from Columbia so, you're not buying local on top of it.
However, Eufloria Flowers in Nipomo grows dozens of varieties of roses locally in a much more environmentally friendly way. They produce hundreds of thousands of stems during the Valentine's Day season.
The seventh generation company uses as many sustainable growing practices as possible, including energy efficient ultra-violet reducing plastic on its greenhouses. It also recycles all of its water, which reduces the use of fertilizers as well. Plus, the company turns all of its trimmings into mulch, which is then sold to a local tree producer.
You can find the roses as local farmers markets.
